The Photographer - by Robert Och

Thursday, August 4th, 2005

I wanted to try something a little different than the camera around the neck thing …So here I am cleaning a lens as seen through a lens and capturing via a third lens and camera…Also the the object that the one lens is sitting on is leather beanbag camera support ….if you don’t have one , let me tell you they are great for use as a tripod for macro shots ..hope this works.

This was a hard shot to set up and compose running from behind to the front of the lens to get the focus right and work with the comp…I probably should have taken shots of the running, I have a small studio so it would have been funny….please enjoy (note; some ps used )If you would like to see even greater detail , please click for the largest view ( it may scare you you have been warned) ;-)

Photos-of-the-Year.com - The Evolution

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

I would like to share some thought about POTY here after more than 2 years of evolution. The fact is, POTY is not by chance to go as it is today, it has overcome some major challenges and achieved important milestones. POTY becomes a stronger website after each evolution. The key success factor is the open and dynamic approach adapted in POTY, that reflects and responses quickly to the rapidly changing environment. However, POTY has not changed its fundamental mission that is the simple key words - Free, Fun and Value.

The open competition itself is not the most importance, but it helps to generate fun and value. It brings excitement and expectation for improvement under a more quantified environment, and as mentioned by members, the winning photographs (selected by open voting) are probably also with good marketing value.

The open competition may establish a bi-directional influence between the photographer (as an artist) and the majority. The artist presents his work that may affect the majority and the majority gives response to his art work, this is an iteration process. Actually, art itself is an evolution in my eyes.

Last point worth mention, the open competition also makes POTY out from being a simple photo gallery for storage nor a club of closely friends in similar taste …..

First Photo Changed My View Of The World - by Deborah Brown

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

I want to share my story about how photography came into my life and how it has changed my view of the world.

I have never liked photogrphy at all. I had an old polaroid camera as a teenager and took dumb pictures of my brother, dogs and friends. I still have the photos. They still look dumb. In 1974, as a junior in high school, I had a rough time, in my opinion. I finished all of my required courses, even my senior stuff and my mom would not let me get a job anywhere, to get out of school early. She said that I had the rest of my life to work and wasn’t going to while in school. That meant that I would have to find any and all junk classes, I called them, to fill up 6 classes per day. Things like, sewing, cooking, rotc, office aide, counselor aide and photography. Little did I know that taking that last class would change my world forever …… Full Article.
